Sioux Falls Collector Well 72

Sioux Falls Collector Well 72

Collector Well 72 is a specialized groundwater well designed to enhance the City of Sioux Falls' municipal water system by delivering higher-quality raw water to the purification plant. Measuring approximately 16 feet in diameter and 40 feet deep, the well features an integrated electrical well house, advanced lateral projection piping, and nearly 3,400 feet of water main piping to connect directly to the city’s water main network.

Unlike a typical well, Collector Well 72 incorporates approximately 825 feet of screened lateral piping at its base to allow water in while preventing sediment and debris from entering the system. A standby generator ensures uninterrupted operation during power outages, providing a critical layer of resiliency. As one of the city's top-producing groundwater sources, the well represents a major investment in sustainable water infrastructure.

Successful completion of the project required extensive coordination among contractors, engineers, municipalities, and landowners. Despite supply chain disruptions and labor shortages, the project team worked collaboratively to mitigate delays, maintain safety, and minimize impacts to surrounding farmland, traffic, and residential areas, making this a model for infrastructure excellence in the region.
